Introduction

It has been said that it takes a village to raise a child. I firmly believe in this. And as such I believe passionately in the value of a strong nurturing community, whether that be a community of friends, family, co-workers, or a geographical community.
I feel I am very fortunate to have benefited from all of the above where I was raised in Antigonish Nova Scotia. I moved away as a young adult, but found myself missing home often in the next years, and wanting to come back. I was finally able to do so about 5 years ago.
It is this community and its people that have always been my rudder, my moral compass, and my motive power. I consider myself to be absolutely spoiled, nurtured, and loved by the vibrant, friendly, kind people that live here. I hope that all the lessons instilled in me add up to someone who is able to turn around and give back in kind.
Wherever I have lived I have found myself involved in work that helps people - either through teaching special needs children, volunteering in nursing homes, or my work with the Red Cross. I have always loved this work, and so when I was able to finally look at training, nursing was very much the right choice for me.
I am active in the community pursuing a broad range of interests from theater and music to walking, yoga, and photography. I like to stay plugged in to what is going on around me, and check in often with people, favorite causes, and friends. Now that my course is over, I look forward to rolling up my sleeves and getting more active in these areas. I also look forward to continuing to learn new skills as a nurse, and will be on the look out for workshops, courses, and lectures that can deepen my understanding of nursing work.
I am excited to be finally persuing my chosen field, and feel that my passion for community involvement and healthy living will be strong assets in my role as a nurse. I am a strong believer in our integrated health care system, and have had the chance to see many sides of it in action in the last two years, both through work and clinical placements. I hope to be able to help strengthen that system by becoming part of the health care team in our community.
