Mentorship

There is an ancient African Proverb that states "It takes a village to raise a child." The proverb is from the Igbo and Yoruba regions of Nigeria and the basic meaning is that raising a child is a communal effort.
I am no exception to this beautiful ancient principle. Looking back in my life I can see many times where people have helped to raise me, inspire me, and support me. I feel very blessed that I can look around me and see those people still in my life today.
We are all a patchwork of the things and people that have shaped us and made us who we are. I hope I choose to take the good things and weave them into the fabric of my life every chance I get. Some of these people have had a very strong influence on my life's values, choices, and direction, and I would like to take a moment to anonymously honour two of these people, because they have heavily influenced my path into nursing.

The first person is a doctor I have known for over 40 years. Through his work he demonstrates compassion, integrity, accountability, professionalism, honor and humility. In his care of patients he is kind, gently-spoken, and non-judging.
He gives of his time generously but knows how to balance that with taking care of himself and his family. It is perhaps this ability to balance life and work that is key to his continued love of his work, which shows. Lastly, he leads by example in the way he lives and stays active and healthy.
If I can keep these teachings in mind, it can only serve to make me a better nurse.

The second person is a woman who is a counselor, and another one who I have known for about 40 years. She has had her share of battles in her own life and with her health, but her spirit is unstoppable.
She is positive, generous, and impassioned about her work and causes. She has written books, and lead many groups in projects defending and protecting women's rights and safety. She pours love and enthusiasm into everything she does, and is an inspiration to all who know her.
I am very fortunate to have people like this in my life. They are a wonderful example to me, and a guidepost when I need direction. They have shaped who I am today, and continue to be a sounding board for me when I have questions or need a few words of wisdom spoken into my life. They have taught me to never compromise in what I believe is right, and that there is nothing I can't do if I put my mind to it.
To both of you, and many others, thank you: I am truly a child who was raised by a village, and it's time for me to turn around and give back.
